Lan reaches the ceremony early and sees many people he does not recognize. There appear to be 10 people chatting on a lower rooftop generally around a fountain. Four are dressed in what appear to be ceremonial military uniforms from the war. The others appear to be well off.

Naturally cautious at all times, Lan decides that standing in a corner by himself and observing others would only get him noticed. "Good of you, thanks." he tells a passing waiter serving chilled wine cups as he scoops one off the tray. Good thing he decided to wear his black overcoat with gold trimmings and clean his weapon, he thinks as he casually joins the well-groomed group of ten people on the lower rooftop, sipping his wine, but just listening for now.

Any hope Lan had of blending in quietly is dashed by the appearance of a warforged at the rooftop waving his arm in an effort to attract attention.

"Lan? Lan! Ha. How fortuitous. Kurvilis and I were only going to be in Sharn for about another week. First we get an invitation from Bren, and now you're here as well. I hope the last four years have been...well, no one's really found them particularly pleasant have they? I've heard some complain that the Peace is nearly as difficult as the War."

Lan's eyes open wide a moment and a wild expression crosses his face, like an animal caught in a corner. He slowly turns towards the shouting Sentinel and raises his wine glass towards him in a subtle gesture of greeting."If you'll excuse me, genetlemen. It seems that ambulatory machination there knows my name and I can't quite place him." He then calmly walks up the stairs towards Sentinel and a smile crosses his face.

"Sentinel! How wonderful you could make it. I was hoping I might not have been the only invitee from our strange group that day. Let me say, I am pleased about the treaty regarding your race. Where have you left Kurvilis by the way?"

"And so am I," Khav says as he slips out from the shadows. He is most assuredly not cleaned up for the occasion, mud still caked on his boots, probably from the Shadow Marches itself. "I was surprised to hear from ir'Gadden, but my dealings with him were only business, and I suppose he realized that, too."

"Ahhh, there you are Kurvilis. Glad to see you again. I hope you have been well these years." says Lan warmly. Then to Khav with some surprise and frowning, hand on the hilt of his weapon at being surprised. "Hello Khav. Please be careful when sneaking up on me. I can...react unexpectedly at times. How fare you?"

As you reintroduce yourselves, a man on the balcony begins speaking. You then look around and see several invited guests have gathered on this pleasant rooftop in a rare moment of winter sunshine. The guests of honor - displaced Cyran nobles and generals - sit arrayed behind a still fountain as a grizzled war veteran drones on about remembrance.

Suddenly, the door beneath the balcony slams open and a sickly gray mist wafts out. Has the Mourning come to the City of Towers?

Features: Illumination: Bright light. It's an unseasonably sunny day, and the sunlight illuminates even the interiors of buildings through archways and windows.
Lower Rooftops: The tower in which the ceremony takes place is surrounded by shorter towers. If a character falls from the rooftop, he falls 20 feet down to a lower rooftop, taking 2d10 damage. The challenge is finding a way back up. A character can use the Athletics skill to climb (DC 20). Alternatively, a character can navigate the mazelike stairs, bridges, and passages of Sharn's towers with two successful Streetwise checks (DC 13), each one requiring a Standard Action. After two successful checks, the character arrives at the bottom of the wide stairs with a move action to spare.
Balcony: A large balcony overlooks the western part of the rooftop, and five of the guests observe the ceremony from that position. The balcony is 10 feet above the rooftop, so a character who falls from the balcony to the rooftop or the wide stair takes 1d10 damage. If a character falls off the north or west side of the balcony, he falls 30 feet down to a lower rooftop, taking 3d10 damage and must find a way back up to the fight.
Fountain: The fountain is a large stone basi about 2 feet high. Entering or leaving the fountain costs 1 extra square of movement. A creature pushed into the fountain can make a DC 10 Acrobatics check to remain standing; if the creature fails the check, it trips over the wall and falls in the fountain.
Trees: Each tree's trunk fills one square. A character can climb a tree with a DC12 Athletics check. A character perched in the branches is considered to be climbing (thus granting CA to all attackers, but the branches grant the character concealment against ranged attacks.

OOC: I feel like this map is kind of confusing, so I broke it into two (the Lower Roof goes 1-12 and A-N and the Upper Balcony from 22-33 and AA-AN). Every part of the Upper Balcony is 20 higher than the same spot on the Lower Roof directly below (J4 and AJ24 are vertically separated by 10 feet). The spiral staircase is the only way up to the balcony without climbing or teleporting. The door at K8 is the only way into the room on the Lower Roof with the spiral staircase. My next post will take the Mourning Haunt's turn, and we can go from there.

The mist moves onto the roof. It seems to take up a 25 foot by 25 foot area, although, it looks like there is something large in the center. The tendrils of the mist seem to suddenly coalesce around some of the people on the roof, holding them in place. Screams ring out into the day (5, 8, 9, and 10 are restrained, take 5 OGD (save ends)).

You hear a gargle inside the mist as one of the fellows drops to the ground dead. Another one runs out and screams, "The Mourning is here! Run for your lives!" All of the people near him flee down the stairs.

Lan's eyes widen in shock at seeing this mist begin consuming the party-guests. He qucikly looks around, but doesn't see any guards or soldiers who might be able to act. "Well friends. Twice in the wrong place at the wrong time in four years. Is that frequent enough to rule out coincidence?" he jests, drawing his falchion. "Sentinel, Kurvilis? I probably don't need to ask, but will you help me with this? There don't seem to be any other able-bodied souls around. Khav? There's no bounty here, but maybe one of the rich nobles you save here today will reward you handsomely. What say you?" Without waiting for their responses, the young man in his black, gold-trimmed overcoat disappears inside the mist.

Feeling momentary disorientation in the mist, Lan continues moving forward in the same direction until he is at the center. "My, aren't you an ugly thing." he whispers and then strikes trying to save all the noblemen restrained. Missing, he attacks again, hoping to at least save one of the noblemen, but can't seem to connect.

1d20+8+1+2=13, 4d4+4=15 Focused Strike, augment 2.

ACTION POINT: 1d20+8+1+1=12, 2d4+4=10 Focused Strike, no augment.

OOC: Grrrr! I'm guessing 13 vs AC and then of course 12 vs AC missed. The idea here was to grant nobles 8, 9, and 10 a saving throw so they don't die automatically when their turns start like 5 did from the OGD. Also, I assumed since we're in a social setting that Lan would need to use a minor action to draw his weapon. Oh well, good intentions, bad rolls.

OOC: Viktor, where did you move to? Also, I forgot to explain the mist a little. The Mourning Haunt has concealment against adjacent creatures and total concealment from all others in the aura (the gray line). You miss with or without the concealment, anyways.

Lan moves forward and as he gets closer to the creature in the mist, he can see it more clearly, although it still is hazy. He sees that the creature is about 7 feet tall and resembles a white furred ape. The mist appears to be coming from its fur.

Lan takes two slashes at the creature, trying to help the bystanders still stuck in the mist, but he is unable to hit the beast. Immediately after his attacks, the three bystanders drop to the floor, dead. Meanwhile, one of the ones on the balcony runs down the spiral staircase and reaches the door.

"There may not be a bounty, but saving my own skin is always a job I'll take on," Khav tells Lan.

Khav moves into the fray, then waits for Sentinel to distract the creature.

Move action - Move to H5.

"No! Damn it all to hell!" says Lan as the three noblemen topple over dead. Seeing the vague outline that looks like Khav, he says. "Hello there. Fancy meeting you here. Self-interest is as good a motivation as any, although I'm afraid the view isn't too pretty.", pointing at the ape-like creature.

Seeing the half-orc charge into the mist, Sentinel holds his arm out, his longsword suddenly appearing in his grasp. He then swings wide in an effort to trap whatever is the cause of the destruction."If we eliminate this quickly, there still may be time to revive the fallen guests."

Actions:
Minor: draw weapon
Move: move to H3. From the description, I can bound through the fountain. Otherwise Sentinel swings around it.
Standard: Sword of Sigils upon Mourning Haunt. Creatures do not get a concealment bonus against burst attacks. Using 2 handed trick.
Free: Skill checks
Upon a hit:
The target is marked until the end of my next turn.
If it makes an attack that does not include me as a target, it takes force damage of 3 after the attack is resolved.
If it hits a creature with an attack that does not include me as a target, I can use an immediate interrupt to reduce the damage by 3.

Sword of Sigils upon Mourning Haunt. (CA) (24Hr) (2handed) (1d20+7+2+1=25, 1d8+3+1=7)
Attack hits AC 25 for 7 damage.

Noting that the arcane runes from his attack found their mark, Sentinel calls out as loud as he can, "Bren, summon the watch!"

Khav and Sentinel move in to flank the beast. Khav swings, but cannot see the beast well enough to hit it, but he is able to distract the horror well enough for Sentinel to hit it. Just as the sword hits the ape, it takes a swipe at Sentinel, but misses the warforged (7 dam to Mourning Haunt, Mourning Haunt is marked and takes 3 dam and loses 3 dam dealt to attacks that don't include Sentinel).

Sentinel thinks back to his recent studies on the Mourning, and recognizes the beast. He knows that Mourning Haunts are demons that have a peculiar connection to the Mournland. No one knows whether they originated from demons that were in Cyre at the time of the Mourning, or if the Mourning has effects that reached far beyond Cyre to touch even the Abyss. Some say that ever event in the world has echoes and reflections in the other planes, and that the Mourning haunt is such an echo. Perhaps, instead, Mourning haunts are somehow related to whatever caused the Mourning. Whichever it is, Mourning haunts are known to be extremely lethal and have not been seen outside the Mournland. Sentinel also knows from reports he has read by the Thousand Yard Stare that the mist surrounding the creature dissipates when it is hurt.

Lord Major Bren ir'Gadden is nowhere to be found, and, in fact, was not yet at the event when the Mourning haunt appeared. Two more bystanders run down the stairs to the lower roof.

Kurvilis isn't quite sure what to do. He can't see the thing clearly, but is afraid to use a widespread effect for fear of hitting his friends. He conjures a light on the creature, hoping this will help others recognize where it is. He then sends a bolt of psychic energy toward the light and hopes.

Minor: Conjure light on creature (or if Kurvilis can't see it at all, just at space H4)
Standard: Illusory ambush vs haunt 1d20+6+1-5=15, 1d6+5=6 Hits WILL 15 (more if the light negates some or all of the concealment) for 6 psychic damage, and on a hit, haunt gets -2 to attacks until the end of Kurvilis' next turn.

Kurvilis tries to pinpoint the Mourning haunt with some light, but it does the help. Fortunately for him, from outside the mist, he can see it well enough that his illusion works and the creature starts to think there are others coming (6 damage to Haunt, -2 to attack until end of Kurvilis' turn).

The last two bystanders on the balcony run down the spiral stairs (there is now no one on the upper balcony) as the Haunt turns its attention to the group of adventurers before it. It first unleashes its tendrils of fog and is able to get a hold of Sentinel and Lan (both are restrained and take 5 OGD, save ends). It then scouts over and bites Sentinel three times, gnashing on the metal body hard each time (Sentinel is hit three times for 27 damage). The four people on the stairway all run down and out of sight.

OOC: Sorry if it was unclear (it was actually unclear to me until the battle started), but the total concealment is only for those IN the mist, but NOT adjacent to the Haunt, so you didn't have to take the -5 penalty.

Initiative:

"Whoa! This thing may be more than we can swallow. Sentinel? Can you stand?" says Lan in alarm at seeing the warforged assailed thusly. He sends some feelings of comfort to him that also bolster his defense (ardent surge). He then swears under his breath (OoE), before conjuring a hole in space to suck the being in. Although his first swipe may miss, he compensates to try hitting it after all and teleport it between Sentinel and Khav once more.

1d6=3 Ardent surge bonus.

1d20+8+1=14, 1d20+8+1=19, 2d4+4=11 Wormhole Plunge the haunt, using OoE to roll two attacks.

1d20+1=8 Save vs restrained/ogd

OOC: Ardent surge heals Sentinel for 10 hp and grants +1 all defenses until end of Lan's next turn. Minor oath of enmity. Wormhole Plunge hits 19 vs AC for 11 damage (half on a miss). Also, hit or miss, haunt is teleported to H4 and either Sentinel or Khav gets a free melee basic attack. The wormhole remains at G4 until end of Lan's next turn. Any creature within 3 of the wormhole gets pulled one closer at start of turn. If pulled in (Lan, Sentinel, Khav), I can teleport them up to 3 spaces as a free action. I'll let you guys decide who gets the melee basic (who is better?) and where you want your character's to teleport to (you can go back to the same spot even).

Edit: Added the save roll. Josh, could you please post our PC's hp or was that intentional?

Lan feels the mist burn in him and then heals the warforged (Sentinel heals 10 HP, uses a surge, and gains +1 to def) and concentrates on hitting the Haunt. He is able to generate a wormhole that teleports the Beast between Sentinel and Khav (11 dam to Haunt, teleported to H4, Khav or Sentinel makes a melee basic attack). Lan tries to shake the mist tendrils, but cannot.

Another bystander runs outside and down the stairs.

OOC: Viktor, no that was me being stupid. Also, because Lan and Sentinel are restrained, unless they save before their turn, they won't end up in the wormhole. And, before Khav's turn Sentinel or Khav get a melee basic attack with CA and concealment (so they cancel each other out). Then Khav is pulled into the portal and teleported by Lan.

Initiative:
Mourning Haunt: down 24, SoS marked, -2 to attack until end of Kurvilis' turn, concealment against adjacent, total concealment against creatures 2 sq away
Lan: 19/24, restrained and 5 OGD (save ends)
Bystanders 8-11: 8, 9, and 10 are dead, 11 fled
=>Khav: 26/26
Sentinel: 14/31, bloodied, +1 def until end of Lan's turn, restrained and 5 OGD (save ends)
Bystanders 12-13:
Kurvilis: 22/22

Khav takes a swipe at the haunt as it reappears in front of him, then swipes at the creature again as he's pulled into and spun out of Lan's creation.

Free action - Melee basic against Haunt (I get to apply SA damage now and on my turn, since it's once between the start of each turn, and this free action is on Lan's turn).

MBA (24H, CA, SA) (1d20+9+2+1=17, 1d6+6=7, 2d6=3)

Hits AC 17 for 10 damage against Haunt.

I'm going to assume Lan can teleport me back where I was...

Standard action - Disheartening Strike for when Sentinel moves to flank with me (H3).

DS (24H, CA, SA) (1d20+9+2+1=21, 1d6+6=7, 2d6=5)

Hits AC 21 for 12 damage against Haunt, and on a hit, Haunt takes -2 to attack until the end of my next turn (rattling).

"Overrrr.....there!" says Lan emphatically as he catches a sense of Khav's desire to remain in place and teleports him back to the same space.

OOC: Thanks Josh, you're right of course. Forgot about the restrained rules (even though we're just using them in ToV). Also, I think Khav can make his disheartening strike without readying it in that case, but maybe Gary had specific plan in mind or just forgot to edit out the text sounding like a readied action.

OOC: Yeah, that bit about Sentinel was an accidental carry over, no readied action this time.

To Lan, "I still function."

OOC: Josh, whatever I did to deserve that, I'm sorry. The only bright side is that Sentinel is not down and no other party member can take 27 damage. Wow. I hope that's the "most damage suffered in a round" record for awhile. While it may simply be a DM secret, was that a single attack, or did that thing just effortlessly walk though a -2 debuff three times to hit our highest AC party member? Josh, is there any indication that we're way in over our heads with this thing?

I would also like a bit of clarification. I'm restrained and I take 5 OGD. Are those conditions bundled? As in, a single save ends both?

I'll let Josh update Gary's turn before I act. No need for a map. I want to see if the BBG gets a free attack every time it's hit with a melee attack or if it's just out to get me. Also, I'm fishing for ideas. I was thinking of marking, using warforged resolve, and then my second wind. That will get me back in the fight and it gives me a saving throw. Also, my daily is a short term teleport I could use as well. And ideas if/where I should hop to? (I6 and run? :P)

Khav takes a quick swing at the Haunt, but cannot quite see it enough to hit enough before he is sucked into the wormhole. The half-orc reappears right where he was and cuts the ape-like demon. Just before the his sword cuts into the Haunt's hide, it swipes back, but almost smacks itself in the face (12 dam to Haunt, -2 to Haunt's attacks).

OOC: The beast bit you three times and rolled well. Remember, when restrained, you grant CA, so it negates the -2. A single save ends both.

Initiative:
Mourning Haunt: down 36, SoS marked, -2 to attack until end of Kurvilis' turn, -2 to attack until end of Khav's turn, concealment against adjacent, total concealment against creatures 2 sq away

=>Sentinel: 14/31, bloodied, +1 def until end of Lan's turn, restrained and 5 OGD (save ends)
