History: The Mark of Shadow developed 3200 years ago on the elves known as "phiarlans" or "spirit keepers." These elves had served as spies for the Undying Court even before the Mark of Shadow appeared. Within a few hundred years, House Vol was destroyed and the Phiarlans fled Aerenal to Khorvaire. Since then, they have served as artisans, spies, and assassins. During The Last War, House Phiarlan served every nation, but some of the families gained preferences for certain nations. The Paelion family was almost completely wiped out by the Thuranni family during the Shadow Schism. The Thurannis ended up splitting off entirely in 972 YK, forming a new House mostly of assassins, while House Phiarlan maintained its spy capabilities.
